Read Reddit in Your Native Language Easily With BothLang

RedditTranslationLanguage

People call Reddit the front page of the internet, and for once the cliché holds up. There are communities for nearly everything — a thread where someone explains a physics problem better than my textbook ever did, another where locals argue about the best ramen shop in a city I'll probably never visit. The catch, if you don't read English fluently, is that most of it stays out of reach. You can feel that there's something good in a thread and still not be able to get at it.

That gap is the entire reason BothLang exists. I got tired of watching interesting discussions scroll past in a language I couldn't follow, and the workarounds were all worse than the problem.

What it actually is

BothLang is a browser extension that translates Reddit posts and comments into your language right on the page. It keeps the original formatting and the thread structure intact, so you're reading a normal Reddit page that happens to be in a language you understand, not a mangled copy of one. No new tab, no separate app, no copy and paste.

Why bother, when you could just use Google Translate?

That's the honest comparison, since pasting text into a translation site is free and already there. A few things pushed me past it.

The first is context. General-purpose translators tend to go word by word, and Reddit is the worst possible place for that — it's wall to wall slang, in-jokes, and abbreviations that fall apart under literal translation. BothLang is tuned for the way people actually write on Reddit, so it reads more like what the person meant than what they literally typed.

The second is friction. Copying a paragraph, switching tabs, pasting it, reading it, switching back, scrolling, repeating — that loop is slow enough that you stop doing it after a few comments. When the translation happens in place, you just scroll and read, and you actually get through the thread.

The third only matters if you're learning the language, but it matters a lot. BothLang can show the original and the translation together, so you're not choosing between understanding the comment and seeing how it was written. You read for meaning and pick up phrasing at the same time, which is most of how reading teaches you a language in the first place.

Give it a try

Don't let a language you haven't learned yet wall you off from the good parts of Reddit. Install BothLang, open a thread you'd normally skip, and see how different it feels to just read it. 🌍
