BothLang vs Trancy: Web Reading or a Language-Learning Suite?

Website TranslationLanguage LearningComparisonTrancy

BothLang and Trancy overlap in two important places: bilingual webpages and YouTube subtitles. That can make them look interchangeable from a feature checklist.

They are not.

BothLang is primarily a browser translation layer. It helps you read a page, inspect a paragraph, translate text you are writing, or follow a captioned YouTube video while keeping the source nearby.

Trancy treats the same content as learning material. It adds vocabulary collection, grammar analysis, subtitle study modes, speaking tools, learning decks, and a learning center around the translation experience.

The right choice depends on what should happen after you understand the sentence.

Review note: Product pages, documentation, and plan descriptions were checked on August 21, 2026. Trancy's pricing page was displaying incomplete numeric prices during research, so this article does not reproduce them. The biggest difference: comprehension versus retention

Suppose you encounter an unfamiliar sentence in a foreign-language article.

With BothLang, you can translate the paragraph, compare the source and result, then continue reading. The goal is to remove friction at the moment of comprehension.

With Trancy, that sentence can become part of a longer learning process. Trancy's official feature page describes word collection, unknown-word highlighting, grammar analysis, sentence structure tools, and learning decks. The sentence is not only translated; it can become study material.

Neither is inherently better. The difference is whether you want the translation to disappear after it has helped you or remain in a system for review.

Webpage translation

BothLang's webpage workflow

BothLang offers several levels of intervention:

  • translate the whole page while keeping original passages visible;
  • select an exact phrase;
  • hover over a paragraph and use Shift, Alt, or Ctrl;
  • start page translation from the context menu;
  • use Google or Microsoft Edge for routine translation;
  • try eligible Gemini-powered translation when context or tone makes the first result unclear.

This range is useful when different pages require different amounts of help. A beginner might translate the whole article. An advanced learner might reveal only two difficult paragraphs.

Trancy's webpage workflow

Trancy also documents full-text immersive translation, bilingual webpage reading, word and sentence selection, paragraph shortcuts, unknown-word highlighting, and custom translation engines.

Its webpage tools lead naturally into the learning system. Words and example sentences can be collected, difficult syntax can be analyzed, and repeated vocabulary can be highlighted.

If you want a pure reading layer, this may be more machinery than necessary. If you want to mine the page for study material, it is exactly the point.

YouTube and video learning

Video is where the gap becomes much larger.

BothLang's YouTube scope

BothLang discovers an available YouTube subtitle track, translates it, and displays bilingual subtitles in sync with playback. The limitation is explicit: a video needs an accessible caption track. BothLang does not promise to transcribe silent or uncaptioned video, and it does not currently advertise Netflix, Disney+, or course-platform support.

This is enough for someone whose job is simply to understand a captioned YouTube video without hiding the original language.

Trancy's video scope

Trancy is built much more heavily around video. Its official site lists YouTube, Netflix, HBO Max, TED, edX, Coursera, and other platforms, along with:

  • theater and subtitle-reading modes;
  • word and sentence bookmarking;
  • sentence segmentation;
  • grammar analysis;
  • listening and speaking practice;
  • playback controls;
  • vocabulary highlighting;
  • subtitle export;
  • AI-generated or processed YouTube subtitles on eligible plans.

Trancy's AI subtitle page says its premium workflow can process YouTube audio asynchronously, which is a different capability from translating an existing caption track. Its pricing page lists plan-based video and transcription quotas.

Choose Trancy if video is your main classroom. Choose BothLang if bilingual YouTube subtitles are one feature inside a broader webpage-reading workflow.

Writing and input translation

BothLang has a distinct writing workflow. In a supported plain-text input, press Alt + Enter to translate the selection or current value. A preview appears before anything changes, with options to replace the source, insert both languages, copy the result, or cancel.

It skips password, payment, disabled, read-only, and unsupported rich-text fields. That limitation protects fields where automatic modification would be risky.

Trancy is stronger in speaking and language analysis. Its public pages emphasize AI speaking practice, pronunciation evaluation, grammar tools, and learning activities. If your goal is composing one practical reply on a website, BothLang's explicit preview may be the more direct interaction. If your goal is systematic speaking and correction practice, Trancy has the broader toolset.

Translation engines and quality

Both products provide more than one route to a translation.

BothLang exposes Google, Microsoft Edge, and eligible Gemini-powered translation. Trancy documents Google, custom translation engines, and additional AI engines on paid plans.

Do not infer a universal quality winner from the product name. Use the same evaluation set in both:

  1. A straightforward article paragraph.
  2. A short reply whose meaning depends on the previous comment.
  3. Slang or an idiom.
  4. A paragraph with specialized terminology.
  5. Names, numbers, and quotations.

Keep the source visible and check whether the translation preserves the claim rather than merely sounding fluent. For consequential medical, legal, financial, or professional text, use an approved translator or qualified person.

Learning tools

This category is not close.

Trancy's product is explicitly designed around language learning. Current public pages list:

  • word and sentence bookmarking;
  • vocabulary books and imports;
  • flashcard practice;
  • AI word definitions;
  • grammar and sentence decomposition;
  • video exercises and summaries;
  • speaking and pronunciation tools;
  • shadowing;
  • a web learning center.

BothLang does not offer a built-in flashcard deck, vocabulary manager, grammar course, pronunciation score, or speaking coach. Its language-learning value comes from making authentic websites and YouTube captions easier to read in two languages.

If your ideal workflow ends in spaced review or speaking practice, Trancy is the more complete product. If you already use Anki, a notebook, or another study system and only need translation at the source, BothLang may stay out of your way better.

Browsers and devices

BothLang is available through the official Chrome, Edge, and Firefox stores.

Trancy's download page lists Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave, Arc, Safari, Firefox Android, and iOS Safari options. That wider platform coverage matters if you want one learning account across desktop and mobile environments.

Check whether the exact feature you need exists on every listed platform. An extension can be available on two browsers without exposing identical video, input, or learning capabilities on both.

Pricing

Both products provide free entry points and paid AI or advanced capabilities. Limits can apply to AI tokens, subtitle processing, PDFs, saved items, learning features, or daily requests.

During this review, Trancy's public pricing page exposed feature tiers but rendered some numeric prices as zero. Because that appeared incomplete, this comparison does not quote a price. BothLang also loads paid plan values dynamically.

Before choosing, open BothLang pricing and Trancy pricing in your region and compare:

  • monthly and annual price at checkout;
  • AI model and token allowance;
  • subtitle processing quota;
  • number of saved words or sentences;
  • supported devices;
  • cancellation and refund rules.

Privacy questions to ask

Translation and learning tools can process webpage text, video subtitles, saved vocabulary, audio, or account data. The data footprint grows when a product stores learning material or transcribes speech.

Read BothLang's privacy policy and Trancy's current policy from its official footer. For each workflow, ask:

  • Which company receives the text or audio?
  • Is content stored, and for how long?
  • Are saved words synchronized to an account?
  • Is data used for training or product improvement?
  • Can you delete history and learning material?

Do not translate confidential material merely because an extension is convenient.

Which product fits you?

Choose BothLang if you are primarily a reader

BothLang fits people who read news, discussions, documentation, social posts, and captioned YouTube videos and want the original language kept in view. Its hover and input workflows also help when full-page translation would be excessive.

Choose Trancy if you are primarily a learner

Trancy fits people who want to collect vocabulary, analyze grammar, practice speaking, review video material, and turn browsing into a structured learning library.

Use a simple trial before deciding

Open the same article and captioned YouTube video in each product. Then measure:

  • setup time;
  • readability of the bilingual layout;
  • missed or incorrectly targeted text;
  • subtitle synchronization;
  • usefulness of study features after the session;
  • how much account setup and configuration the workflow requires.

The winner is the tool you will still use after the novelty wears off.

Start with your real goal

If you want translation to help you understand and then get out of the way, explore BothLang's features or install it for your browser.

If you want each page and video to feed vocabulary, grammar, speaking, and review activities, Trancy is likely the better fit. The meaningful question is not “Which extension has more features?” It is “Do I want to read this content, or build a course around it?”
